History of ASCII & Emojis

The Birth of ASCII

The American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) was first published as a standard in by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). It was developed from telegraph codes and originally used 7 bits to represent 128 different characters.

Early computer users began creating art using these characters in the 1960s and 1970s, giving birth to what we now know as ASCII art. This form of expression became particularly popular on early bulletin board systems (BBS) and email.

The Emoji Revolution

The first emoji was created in by Shigetaka Kurita, an engineer at the Japanese telecom company NTT DoCoMo. The original set included 176 12ร—12 pixel images designed to make electronic communication more engaging.

In , emoji characters were added to the Unicode Standard, making them universally compatible across different platforms and devices. Today, new emojis are added to the standard every year through a proposal process managed by the Unicode Consortium.
